Had pest control done last year and the results were amazing! The cockroaches almost completely disappeared afterwards. With summer coming up again, I decided to get them back this year for another treatment. Definitely recommend doing it once a year, especially before summer. It really makes a difference!

Understanding termite damage

Suspected Termite Damage Should Be Investigated

Termites can feed on timber while remaining concealed behind surfaces, inside structural elements or within other difficult-to-see areas. Visible damage can therefore be only one part of what is occurring within a property.

Damaged timber does not automatically confirm that termites are currently active. The damage may relate to previous activity, and a professional assessment is important before deciding on the next termite-management step.

If termite activity is suspected, inspection can help distinguish accessible evidence of current activity from older damage and identify other areas that may warrant attention.

This assessment forms part of our broader Termite Pest Control Sydney service.

Possible evidence of termite damage

  • Hollow-sounding timber
  • Soft or weakened timber
  • Damaged skirting boards
  • Damaged door or window frames
  • Termite workings or mud leads
  • Changes beneath painted surfaces
  • Damaged flooring or timber elements
  • Previous termite evidence
Warning signs

What Can Termite Damage Look Like?

Termite evidence can vary depending on the location, timber, construction and extent of accessible activity.

Hollow Timber

Timber affected internally may sound different when tapped, although this alone does not confirm termite activity.

Soft Timber

Some affected timber can become weakened or fragile where internal material has been damaged.

Mud Leads

Termite workings or mud-like shelter tubes around building elements can be an important sign requiring professional assessment.

Surface Changes

Changes around painted, timber or wall surfaces can sometimes occur where underlying material has been affected.

Found Live Termites While Checking Damaged Timber?

Avoid unnecessarily disturbing them. Pulling damaged timber apart, breaking open termite workings or applying household sprays can disturb the activity before the area has been professionally assessed.

Where practical, leave the affected area as you found it and arrange a termite inspection.

Important distinction

Active Termites and Old Termite Damage Are Not the Same Thing

Visible damage tells you that timber may have been affected, but the presence or absence of current termite activity needs to be assessed separately.

Current Termite Activity

If live termites or accessible evidence of current activity are identified, the immediate priority is determining an appropriate termite-management response.

Termite Treatment Sydney →

Previous Termite Damage

Timber can remain damaged after termite activity has ceased. Discovering old damage therefore does not by itself establish that termites are currently active.

Further assessment may still be appropriate to understand the surrounding termite risk and accessible evidence.

Professional assessment

Termite Inspection After Discovering Damage

Finding damaged timber is a reason to investigate further rather than assuming the visible location represents the full extent of the issue.

A termite inspection can assess accessible areas for current termite evidence, previous activity and conditions that may contribute to termite risk.

The findings can then help determine whether active treatment, monitoring, protection or another termite-management response should be considered.

An inspection may consider

  • Accessible damaged timber
  • Evidence of current termite activity
  • Evidence of previous activity
  • Accessible surrounding areas
  • Building perimeter
  • Moisture-related conditions
  • Timber-to-soil contact
  • Existing termite-management measures
Pest control vs building repair

Termite Management and Building Repairs Are Different Tasks

Pest-control assessment focuses on termite activity, termite risk and appropriate termite-management measures.

Determining whether damaged building components require structural repair or replacement is a separate matter and may require assessment by an appropriately qualified building professional.

Where active termites are present, it is important to consider termite management before repair work unnecessarily disturbs the affected area.

Two separate questions

  • Are termites currently active?
  • Where is accessible activity located?
  • What termite management is appropriate?
  • What longer-term protection should be considered?
  • Does damaged material require building assessment?
  • What repair work is appropriate?
Long-term management

After Termite Activity Is Identified

Managing active termites and considering future termite risk are connected parts of a broader termite-management strategy.

Termite Treatment

Where active termites are confirmed, an appropriate treatment strategy can be considered according to the inspection findings.

Termite Protection

Longer-term protection can involve suitable management measures, inspection and attention to relevant property conditions.

Termite Damage Across Different Property Types

Termite evidence can be discovered in homes, commercial properties, strata buildings and other timber-containing structures.

Strata Properties

In strata buildings, termite findings may need to be considered in relation to individual lots and relevant common-property areas.

Our Process When Termite Damage Is Suspected

The priority is to understand the termite situation before deciding on treatment and longer-term management.

Inspect

Assess the reported damage and relevant accessible areas for termite evidence.

Identify

Consider whether accessible evidence indicates current activity, previous activity or requires further investigation.

Manage

Where active termites are identified, determine an appropriate termite-management approach for the property.

Protect

Consider appropriate monitoring, inspection and longer-term termite-protection measures.

Frequently asked questions

Termite Damage Sydney FAQs

What does termite damage look like?

Possible signs can include hollow-sounding or weakened timber, damaged skirting or frames, termite workings and other changes to timber surfaces. A professional inspection is important because visible damage alone does not confirm current termite activity.

Does termite damage mean termites are still active?

Not necessarily. Damage may remain after previous termite activity. Inspection is required to assess accessible evidence and determine whether current termite activity is present.

What should I do if I find live termites in damaged timber?

Avoid unnecessarily disturbing the termites or applying household sprays. Where practical, leave the area as you found it and arrange a professional termite assessment.

Can Safe Pest Control inspect termite damage?

Safe Pest Control can assess accessible evidence of termite activity, previous activity and relevant conditions as part of a termite inspection. Building or structural repair requirements are a separate matter and may require an appropriately qualified building professional.

Should damaged timber be removed immediately?

If live termites or suspected current activity are present, avoid unnecessarily disturbing the affected area before professional assessment. Repair decisions can then be considered separately from termite management.

What happens after active termites are identified?

An appropriate treatment strategy can be considered according to the inspection findings, followed by suitable longer-term termite management such as monitoring, inspection or protection measures.
